In this game, players control climbers as they venture up 32 ice-covered mountains to recover stolen vegetables from a giant condor. Armed with only a wooden mallet, the climbers must carve openings in the ice above to progress.
Each mountain level in Ice Climber consists of eight layers of colorful ice and a bonus stage. Standard ice blocks are easily disposed of, serving as barriers and platforms. However, square ice blocks with higher detail are indestructible, forcing players to find alternative paths. The game also features hatched ice, which acts as a conveyor belt, sliding the climbers either left or right. Additionally, there are unbreakable moving platforms resembling clouds that add an extra challenge to the gameplay.
The bonus stage at the peak of each mountain provides a time-limited opportunity for players to navigate trickier jumps and multiple moving platforms. It is also the only place to recover stolen vegetables, particularly the coveted eggplants. Collecting a piece of corn from the fifth bonus stage grants players an extra life.
